Jacques Pinel was a pioneer in the fight for universal access to quality-assured medicines. Jacques was a pharmacist by background and spent most of his professional life with Doctors Without Borders. He never stopped developing ideas, new projects and new networks, and delighted in sharing his experience, his enthusiasm and his vision with friends and colleagues. He passed away one year ago.

It was Jacques' original reflection on access to quality-assured medicines that prompted and fed a number of initiatives, among them the Charter on Quality of Medicines and QUAMED. Both initiatives are supported by ITM. For QUAMED in particular he played an inspiring role, acting as advisor to the Technical Working Group and to the Steering Committee.

Jacques was aware of the importance of continuous education. When he died, he was working on a document aimed at lay people, explaining the challenges linked to poor-quality medicines. A group of friends and colleagues completed the document.
