The Institute of Tropical Medicine of Antwerp celebrated its centennial
throughout the fall of 2006 with an international partner meeting, a scientific North-South conference, a dazzling staff party, a festival of tropical films, the opening of its new Campus and an acadamic session in the presence of HRH Princess Astrid, Prof. Peter Piot and other leading figures. These also concluded a decade of intense reform, growth and investment.
On 10 January, the ITM organizes a centennial closing party for its many friends and sympathizers in the civil society. On this occasion, the "Patrons of the ITM" will be founded under the chairmanship of Baron Bertrand, CEO of Ackermans & van Haaren and Minister of State Andries Kinsbergen as Honorary Chairman.
Art Gallery Campo & Campo hosts the event and will auction an historic and unique champagne magnum bottle "Esprit du Siècle" of Moët et Chandon, donated to the ITM by the Six of Antwerp (Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee) in support of its AIDS research. Moët et Chandon produced only 323 bottles of this unique blend, composed of the 11 best millésimes of the 20th century. The Antwerp Six were awarded one of these in honour of their contribution to fashion.
The auction will also include unique collection pieces of the Six, as well as works of art related to the ITM's beautiful Art Deco building, an authenticated concert outfit of George Michael and hopefully many more
items from the world of fashion, art and music. The items are on display at Campo & Campo from 15th December onwards.
The event also offers a last opportunity to view the art show "Afrika anders" ("Africa differently"), a confrontation between contemporary and traditional African art. This exhibition runs from 12th December 2006 to 10 January 2007 at Campo & Campo.

1 Esprit du Siècle Moët & Chandon

Price sold : 6.500 €

Description:
In the year 2000 the world-famous champagne house Moët & Chandon presented a magnum bottle of “Esprit du Siècle” to the “Antwerp Six”, as a token of recognition for their contribution to fashion in the 20th century.

Moët & Chandon only produced 323 bottles of “Esprit du Siècle”. This exclusive magnum is made from champagnes from the eleven best years in the last century, i.e. 1900, 1914, 1921, 1934, 1943, 1952, 1962, 1976, 1983, 1985 en 1995.  This ‘millésime des millésimes’ was made as a tribute to the past and a commitment to the future. Most of the bottles have been donated to people whose achievements stood out and who have led the way for the generations to come. Besides the Antwerp Six, Eva Herzigova, Kenzo, Johan Cruyff, Bernard Haitink and Inès Sastre received this prestigious bottle.

The “Antwerp Six”, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten and Marina Yee all became world-famous fashion designers after graduating from the Fashion Academy in Antwerp 20 years ago. They only got together once more for receiving this magnum and donated it immediately afterwards to the AIDS research of the ITM.

In 2006 the Institute celebrates its centennial and this is the right moment to auction this valuable “Esprit du Siècle” champagne. This unique magnus carries a charter signed by the Six and the original Moët & Chandon papers. A CD-Rom"‘Les 100 images du siècle’ is included and contains one hundred artistic impressions of the famous champagne house. For the last six years the bottle has been kept in the wine cellars of Moët & Chandon in Epernay.

So far only a few of these bottles have been sold or auctioned, at prices between 15,000 and 20,000 €. The historic top class restaurant “U Malířů” in Prague has a bottle on its wine list at the price of 45,000 €.

1 pair of BIX football shoes by Dirk Bikkembergs

Price sold : 350 €

Description:
BIX are the first true luxury football shoes designed by Dirk Bikkembergs.
For his first creation for real sportsmen in the field, Dirk Bikkembergs wanted to return to the origins of football. He chose for kangaroo leather and traditional craftsmanship techniques. BIX, the very first professional shoes made by a fashion designer, is now a reality. BIX originated from the combination of Bikkemberg’s enthusiasm and the experience of a specialised company, and therefore it has the very best of what is currently available on the international market. The shoe shape has been fully modernised, following the morphological modifications of the human foot in the last 30 years. The shoes are made of kangaroo leather, the original material used to make football shoes. They are manufactured in an artisanal fashion, i.e. the individual components are hand-sewn – and are entirely made in Italy. Such details truly make these shoes a top quality luxury item, conspicuously different from the standard products of the major international brands. BIX was designed to the taste of the true “aesthetes” of football.

The BIX on display are a standard model with a shop value of 240 €. The buyer receives a pair of BIX in his own size, signed by Dirk Bikkembergs.

1 Hohner harmonica of Jean “Toots” Thielemans

Price sold : 4.200 €

Description:
This Hohner harmonica type “Mellow Tone” was played by Jean “Toots” Thielemans, the world-famous Belgian jazz-musician, during countless concerts in the last 15 years. Toots applied little stickers to the chrome, in order to distinguish between the different instruments (of the same type) he used in his concerts and recordings. Toots Thielemans always has several of these harmonica’s to his disposition, because during the concert humidity or e.g. a single moustache hair may change the tone of one or several notes, or even break the spring of the “slide”. And by frequent use and bending (of notes by respiratory techniques) harmonica’s may become “tired”. Such subtle differences may be barely audible to the untrained ear, but they definitely influence the mood of the melody. On one instrument the number “92” is still vaguely visible. This means Toots started using this one in 1992. On another the sticker reads “D 1”: this means that his trusted repair man, Dick Gardner from Minnesota USA, has used his best skills to bring this harmonica to perfect performance condition.

4 replica’s of Allard l’Olivier paintings

Price sold : 2.600 €

Description:
In the early 20th century, Fernand Allard l’Olivier (1883-1933), the undisputed leader of the “Africanists”, travelled in East Congo to make paintings of the domestic life, commisioned by the Ministry of Colonies. This series became the absolute zenith in the oeuvre of Allard l’Olivier, and featured as the eye-cathers of the main pavilion of the Antwerp World Fair of 1920, which was completely dedicated to the Congo. The powerful colourful paintings show people, landscapes and scenes from the Central Africa of the (nineteen)twenties. In 1932 these large paintings were integrated in the monumental staircase hall of the new art deco building that would soon house the Institute of Tropical Medicine.
In 2006 these paintings were restored and photographed by the Galerij Primimoda (2010 R Street, NW Washington, DC 20009, Tel: 001 202 2327011 www.primimoda.com), specialised in African art. They issued a highly exclusive series of splendid reproductions in 500 copies (size 60x50 cm, frame in black and gold – Scialio, London).
Tha auctioned set bears the number 2 in the series, and it is the first one that is offered for sale. The higher numbers will be on sale from Primimoda at 750 $ a piece.

1 set  of etchings of ITM by Jef Van Grieken

Price sold : 350 €

Description:
In 2000 ITM commissioned the famous Antwerp artist Jef Van Grieken to make a set of five etchings of the art-deco building, the gardens and the interior of the Institute of Tropical Medicine. These etchings were issued in an edition of 100 copies, 25 of which were bundled in a luxury case, together with etched commentaries. In principle, ITM reserves these sets as special gifts for highly prominent visitors, but on the occasion of its centennial, exceptionally one of these sets (13/25) will be auctioned. The etchings (20 x 30 cm) are printed on Zerkall paper (39 x 54 cm).
