General

Overall aim

The overall aim of the research of the Department of Microbiology is to develop tools and intervention strategies for the control of infections with TB, HIV and associated diseases, mainly in developing countries.

Notable results have been achieved regarding the AIDS virus, hantaviruses, haemorrhagic fevers, leprosy and tuberculosis.

The Department of Microbiology has been recognized by the World Health Organization and by the Belgian Ministry of Health as an international and a national reference centre for AIDS research, and it boasts a solid reputation in this area

Unit of Mycobacteriology

The Mycobacteriology Unit aims to optimize the diagnosis and control of tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). We therefore focus on the rapid detection and worldwide surveillance of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB), and the control of Buruli Ulcer (BU) in developing countries.

Unit of Immunology

The research of the Immunology unit is focused on the cellular immunology of HIV in humans and SIVcpz in chimpanzees, and on the immune interaction between HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).

Unit of Virology

The Virology Unit studies the impact of the phenotypic and genotypic diversity of HIV on vaccine development, antiviral therapy and diagnosis of HIV.

Unit of HIV/STI Epidemiology and Control

The overall aim of this unit is to identify and develop effective strategies for the prevention and control of STD and HIV/AIDS in developing countries. The research activities have contributed to the development of strategies for STD/HIV control. There is strong cross-fertilisation between research on the one hand and technical assistance and teaching on the other.
