12 Surveillance

Surveillance can be conducted in several ways. Carnivores can be regularly tested serologically and constitute a sensitive sentinel system of rodent plague in a specific area. Yersinia pestis can be detected in animals found dead in a region. The fleas can be collected from abandoned rodent nests, identified and tested. Live rodents too can be captured and these animals and their fleas examined.
