Institutional collaboration to strengthen the rational basis for prevention and control of malaria and other parasitic diseases in Southeast Asia
(ref: 921100 )
Objectives
To strengthen at regional level the capacities in biomedical and epidemiological research required for the surveillance and prevention of malaria and other parasitic diseases in Vietnam, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries
Activities/expected results
  1. Scientific collaboration and exchanges at national and regional level are improved between Vietnam, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries. Recommendations are formulated for the prevention and control of malaria and cysticercosis. Commitments are made between the countries for applying common strategies in particular for border malaria.

  2. Human resources at NIMPE/CNM are trained and available in several disciplines for addressing parasitic diseases, in particular malaria and cysticercosis, through a multidisciplinary approach (e.g. epidemiology, entomology, molecular biology, helminthology, serology, clinical research, social sciences and biostatistics). Staff at the peripheral level (province and district) is trained and is involved in monitoring and evaluation activities.

  3. The infrastructure at NIMPE/CNM is improved in order to perform research of high scientific and technological levels. Laboratories are (re-)organised to fulfil safety and quality criteria. Good practices based on written standard procedures are applied (field studies, data management, standard operational procedures in molecular biology and serology).

  4. Knowledge and tools are generated that contribute to improve the control of malaria and cysticercosis in the countries and the region of Southeast Asia/
