General Information
Advances in HIV therapy have extended the life expectancy of thousands but have not significantly affected HIV transmission. Women and children continue to bear the disproportionate burden of the epidemic around the world. We must identify effective agents that can prevent / reduce transmission worldwide through antimicrobial action. The need for an effective topical microbicide is great, and such a microbicide would have the potential to drastically alter the course and face of the HIV epidemic globally.

Specific goals of the conference are:
  • To provide updates on current research in microbicides and to review the state-of-the-art methodological, clinical, ethical and behavioural issues in microbicide research.
  • To allow opportunities for researchers and public health workers from developed and developing countries to identify practical applications for current research and clinical trials, as well as ways to extend knowledge about topical microbicides.
  • To present novel or innovative work in the area of microbicides and other female controlled methods.
  • To present opportunities for new investigators to become more involved in the field of microbicide research, as well as updates on advocacy for grassroots associations.

The 3-day conference will be divided into three tracks: Basic Science, Clinical Science, and Behavioural Science, Public Health and the Microbicide Marketplace. The format will consist of:

  • Scientific overviews and track specific presentations with track plenary sessions, invited lecturers and presentations of original research.
  • Workshops to review issues unique to microbicides, such as trial design and outcome measures and ethical issues in clinical trials of microbicides.
  • Poster sessions.
