ITM has the pleasure to congratulate and introduce Dr Elizabeth Tabitha Abbew (Ghana), the freshly elected alumni representative in ITM’s General Council for the 2022–2026 term. Tabitha will take over from Anne Muendi Musuva (Kenya), who was the first ITM alumna elected to assume this role since the establishment of the General Council on 31 January 2018.
Dr Elizabeth Tabitha Abbew is a specialist in internal medicine at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Ghana. In August 2021, she graduated from the novel ITM Master of Science in Tropical Medicine (MTM), clinical sciences orientation, and started her PhD training in January 2022. She worked as the coordinator for tuberculosis activities at the hospital and ran the Tuberculosis, HIV and Hepatitis Clinics, where she was responsible for the acute care of patients with infectious diseases. Additionally, she worked as the referral clinician for tuberculosis activities in the Central Region of Ghana. In addition to this, she had the opportunity to teach medical students and physician assistants as a Part-Time Lecturer with the University of Cape Coast, School of Medical Sciences.
During her MTM studies, Tabitha had the chance to gain valuable experience as a class representative, being a liaison between her colleagues, the course coordinators, and the education board. She says, “this allowed me to understand better what students hold dear and how to successfully communicate and interact with different stakeholders.” As a first reaction to her election as alumni representative, Tabitha states: "I am honoured to be given the opportunity to represent the alumni’s interest on the ITM General Council. As the representative, I will consult the alumni community on how they envision the future of the ITM to be. So that the institution will continue to educate professionals of the highest level to serve the whole globe. Ubuntu: I am because we are."
As alumni representative, Tabitha will be contributing to ITM’s journey and ambitions to be a leading open and global campus in tropical medicine and international health. We wish her an enriching and constructive experience in our General Council with many exciting and fruitful exchanges and collaborations.
