Alumni webinar #14: “COVID-19 in Brazil - regional and local perspective on clinical case management in the early phase of the pandemic”

Register in advance via Zoom.

Brazil is among the countries most affected globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, available data on the epidemiological and clinical features of the disease in Brazil are limited. Clinical outcomes of hospitalised patients are known to be seriously affected by COVID-19, both directly and indirectly. In such indirect effects, COVID-19 has been speculated to intersect with another top priority of globally health, namely antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

In this seminar, ITM alumna Dr Ana Paula Matos Porto (AIM, 2018), involved as a researcher in the COVID-19 outbreak in Brazil, will provide one of the few data-driven examples of the implications of COVID-19 for AMR and healthcare-associated infections, presenting data from 21 Brazilian ICUs in the early phase of the pandemic. Additionally, she will present her findings on COVID-19 hospital mortality in a dedicated tertiary hospital in Ceará (Northeastern Brazil). She will particularly focus on how factors associated with clinical outcomes of COVID-19 have evolved over the course of the pandemic.
