  Introduction

The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp aims at the advancement and spread of science that contributes to health globally with focus on low- and middle income countries. ITM conducts fundamental, translational and applied scientific research,  delivers advanced education and provides medical, scientific and societal expert services. The ITM is an open and international campus where staff, students and researchers work on international health challenges.

The mission of the Department of Public Health of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is to conduct public health research of international standing, provide postgraduate education of high quality and engage in service delivery with the ultimate goal to advance global health. The department is organized in 4 research Groups, each comprised of 2 or 3 multidisciplinary units, including public health specialists, epidemiologists, social scientists and health economists.

The Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Group focuses on a broad area of health-related issues, ranging from prevention and control of HIV as well as other STIs, sexual health to family planning, maternal and reproductive health, and neonatal health (https://research.itg.be/en/organisations/sexual-and-reproductive-health-research-group).

Within this Group, ITM seeks to recruit a Professor of HIV and Sexual Health to strengthen and expand its comprehensive and innovative research agenda, closely linked to training and scientific capacity strengthening in this field, and in close collaboration with the Maternal and Reproductive Health unit. Current research of the HIV and Sexual Health unit focuses on HIV prevention among vulnerable groups, including PrEP implementation in Belgium and sub-Sahara Africa, whereby both epidemiologists and social scientists work closely together.

  Assignment

  • Develop a research portfolio in the field of HIV and sexual health, including acquiring competitive funding.
  • Closely collaborate with other researchers in the SRH Group, the Department of Public Health and the Institute, aiming for synergy and joint projects
  • Develop partnerships and international reputation and visibility of ITM’s work in this field
  • Explore and lead novel collaborations with Flemish academic centra
  • Maintain existing and establish novel research collaborations with international partners, in particular in low and middle income countries (LMIC), and strengthen scientific capacity through relevant research and education activities
  • Attract and mentor Masters and PhD students
  • Develop and lead teaching activities on sexual health and HIV/STI prevention within ITM’s post-graduate courses and the MSc in Public Health
  • Provide expert advice to national and international stakeholders in the field

  Profile

  • PhD that is relevant to the position
  • Excellent track record of high-quality, peer-reviewed research on HIV/STI prevention and sexual health
  • Track record of successful competitive grant writing in the field in the role of principal investigator, co-principal investigator or leadership within a proposal such as work package lead
  • Existing network of research collaborators in the field, including in LMICs
  • Strong expertise in epidemiological methods and quantitative research, including evaluation of public health strategies
  • Leader, mentor, and strong communicator
  • Experience with management of professionals
  • Excellent knowledge of English and a good command of Dutch (or otherwise willingness to learn.

Additional:

  • (Bio)medical training, for example as a medical doctor.
  • Affinity with qualitative and health systems research methods
  • Experience in postgraduate teaching, and MSc and PhD thesis supervision
  • Knowledge of other languages, in particular French, is an asset

  • A full-time tenured appointment, with/after an initial evaluation after three years. Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff.
  • A salary set according to the pay scales of ITM and the Flemish universities and to your work experience with supplementary benefits: a public transport subscription and/or bicycle fee, private pension scheme and meal voucher subscription.
