Who: Fernando Augusto Bozza, M.D., Ph.D Senior Scientist and Head of Critical Care at the National Institute of Infectious Disease Evandro Chagas, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Ministry of Health, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Bozza’s research team activities involve clinical and translational research on severe emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. The investigations have focused on the long-term outcomes of severe infections, including the neuro-cognitive consequences of sepsis, malaria, and HIV. In recent years, he also worked in the consolidation of new collaborative initiatives of clinical research in Brazil and Latin America to fill the gaps of knowledge regarding the management of critically ill patients in developing countries and the development of large multicenter clinical trials in these settings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his group has worked on several questions, including the impact of the pandemic in the Brazilian health system, iniquity in health care, and the evolution of mortality nationwide data, Bozza developed an initiative to test, track and trace COVID-19 cases with more than 2 million downloads and 450,000 free testing (app Dados do Bem - Data for good). “Dados do Bem” has also been applied in an integrative and participatory model of surveillance and health care to mitigate the impact of the pandemic in vulnerable communities.
