  Introduction

The Department of Clinical Sciences is opening up a new position for a professor clinical immunology to study the immune responses during and following natural infections and vaccination, including aspects of protection, cure, latency, treatment outcome or persistence. The understanding of immune responses and immunopathology is important to develop and evaluate vaccines, adjuvants, host-directed therapies, prognostic and diagnostic tools for tropical and emerging infections (also in immunocompromised patients).

The Clinical Immunology Unit headed by this professor will develop a competitive research agenda and bring added value to the already existing research lines in clinical, biomedical and public health sciences. The unit will also increase the critical mass of competences in immunology at ITM, and collaborate closely with the new Experimental Immunology Unit in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, and with the Department of Public Health.

  Assignment

We are looking for an outstanding academic in the field of immunology to perform advanced studies aiming to (i) identify human immune-therapeutic and vaccine targets, (ii) assess (vaccine-induced) immunological correlates of protection, and (iii) develop novel diagnostic tests based on humoral or cellular immunity iv) understand immunopathology.

  • You will set up a competitive research agenda in the field of immunology of tropical infectious diseases in Belgium and in low and middle-income countries.
  • You will perform interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers at ITM, and colleagues nationally and internationally.
  • You will attract external research funding and strengthening the visibility of research in the department and at ITM.
  • You will teach in the field of immunology at post-initial master’s and PhD level, as well as various specialised short courses.
  • You will support immunological activities in multidisciplinary research projects in clinical, biomedical and epidemiologic projects.
  • You will execute line management duties as head of the unit.
  • You will report to the head of the Department of Clinical Sciences.
  • You will contribute to the departmental and institutional policy development.
  • Clinical service delivery is not part of the assignment but can be considered.

  Profile

  • You have a PhD.
  • You have a strong academic track record of grant writing, PhD supervision, project management and scientific output.
  • You are fluent in English, quality-oriented, and have a team-focused emphatic personality and affinity to work internationally in resource poor contexts.
  • You have experience with immunological studies in resource-constrained settings is an asset.

  Offer

  • A fulltime tenure appointment in the initial rank of assistant-, associate- or (full) professor, depending on your qualifications.
