Research fellow - Expert hospital infection prevention and control

The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is internationally recognised as a center of excellence for education, research and service delivery in the field of tropical medicine. The Department of Clinical Sciences concentrates on patient-based research, training and services in low-resource settings, with emphasis on tropical and infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. It also runs the Medical Services of the ITM.

ITM wants to invest in hospital infection prevention and control in low resource settings. It opens a position for a research fellow in the Unit of Tropical Laboratory Medicine (Head Prof. Jan Jacobs) and fits into ITM’s interdisciplinary research team ‘Bacterial Infections in the Tropics’.


  • You hold a Master and PhD degree in biomedical sciences. Competence in clinical microbiology is an asset.
  • You have been trained and have practical experience in hospital infection prevention and control. Certification is an asset.
  • You have at least 4 years of professional experience. Working experience in hospitals in low-resource settings is an asset.
  • You have relevant research experience.
  • You are competent in higher education and expert advanced training, capable of guiding researchers, technical staff and trainees.
  • You have the flexibility to travel to low-resource settings.
  • You are able to speak and write English and French. Knowledge of Dutch and other relevant languages is an asset.
  • You are a team player and a strong communicator, able to build strong multi-disciplinary working relationships.
  • You are receptive to the sociocultural and organisational healthcare context in low-resource settings.
  • You are quality-driven, service-minded and result-orientated.
  • You have excellent analytical and (academic) writing skills.


  • You will conduct research on effective, affordable and acceptable interventions and policies of hospital infection prevention and control in low-resource settings.
  • You will develop evidence-based guidance on hospital infection prevention and control in low-resource hospital settings.
  • You will initiate, stimulate and supervise teaching, training and implementation programmes in hospital infection prevention and control at ITM and abroad.
  • You will attract and manage external funding for these activities and projects.
  • You will align with the interdisciplinary Bacterial Infections in the Tropics research team at ITM and contribute to its key outputs and activities.
  • You will perform regular missions to low-resource settings in the scope of the above.
  • You will build a solid professional network in your expertise and beyond.
