The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is internationally recognized as a centre of excellence for education, research and service delivery in the field of tropical medicine and public health in low and middle income countries (LMICs).
The Institute has a vacancy for a Head of the Education Office, (M/F/X). This vacancy is a senior management position and is open to internal and external candidates.
The Education Office is responsible for working with the education units of the three scientific departments on the development, implementation and quality assurance of education policies. The Education Office assists ITM's scientists and supporting staff in all aspects of education, including the development of the course portfolio, the management of the student life cycle, the management of education costs and budgets, the scholarship programme, the alumni networking and national and international collaborations in education. The Education Office includes, beyond the Head, an Internationalisation Officer, the head of Student Support and a Policy Support Officer.
ITM is seeking to recruit a Head of the Education Office, which is part of the Directors' Office and reports to the Management Committee. This position will report directly to the Director and collaborate closely with the heads of the two other policy support offices, namely the Research Office and the International Cooperation and Development Office and the three departmental education coordinators. The main responsibilities of the position will be to develop, implement and coordinate education policy and activities, be responsible for adherence to academic regulations and overall quality assurance, and represent ITM externally for education matters.
What you do
You lead and manage the Education Office team.
You advise and support ITM management in the formulation and implementation of ITM’s education policy and governance.
You manage quality assurance and (re-)accreditation processes of education at institutional level in coordination with the three departmental education units, course leaders and programme directors.
You act as Registrar in the development/adjustment and application of the academic regulations and, if need be, the exceptions to the agreed rules and procedures, in concertation with ITM management and the departmental education units. This includes certification of studies at ITM towards external stakeholders.
You provide advice and support to the three departmental education units, course leaders and programme directors on curriculum development and course management and on the alignment of new initiatives with ITM’s education strategies and institutional policy plan.
You stimulate and support the development of interdepartmental educational initiatives and the harmonisation of educational operational and administrative processes across ITM.
You represent ITM in the field of education and manage the strategic contacts and networking, both internationally and with higher education institutions and stakeholders in Flanders and at Federal level as mandated by ITM management.
You develop and implement, with the team and department education coordinators, marketing strategies for education at ITM.
You support the institutional bodies for education; Education Policy Committee (sub-committee of the ITM’s Academic Council) and the bodies for operational coordination.
You act as Ombudsperson in the case of complaints of students and/or staff , related to education.
You monitor and report on key performance indicators of education development, output and impact, both internally and externally as outlined in the ITM policy plan.
You support the development of digital tools for education.
You stimulate and support creation of educational initiatives with global partners.
You assist in professionalisation initiatives for lecturers and supporting staff.
You oversee the management of the education and scholarship budgets.
What we are looking for
You have a Master degree in education sciences or equivalent acquired competencies. A PhD is an asset.
You have substantial working experience in education management and policy in higher education; experience with education in the life sciences is an asset.
You have experience with internal and external (accreditation) quality assurance processes in education.
You have excellent networking, communication and writing skills. You are able to convince based on evidence and expertise.
You have a strong affinity with the mission and values of ITM and ITM’s educational vision.
You have a pro-active and can-do mentality, are flexible, creative and client-oriented, aware of the central importance of human capital.
You are committed to high standards of quality, integrity and partnership.
You are willing to travel within and outside Europe.
You are proficient in English and Dutch. Knowledge of French is an asset.
Experience in of affinity with teaching in ITM’s scientific niche is an asset.
International professional experience, including professional exposure to low and middle income country higher education contexts, is an asset.
An in-depth understanding of the Flemish higher education landscape is an asset.
