ITM doctors strengthen screening and follow-up COVID-19 patients UZA
Specialised physicians of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (ITM) are strengthening Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) in the screening and treatment of COVID-19 patients. The trained ITM physicians are experienced in working with infectious diseases.
In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, specialised ITM physicians have been supporting UZA for the past few weeks. They are doing so by offering UZA reinforcement in the screening and follow-up of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The close ties between ITM and UZA's Department of General Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine have existed for decades. The worldwide COVID-19 outbreak means this extensive cooperation is being put to work. ITM also continues to help the patients in ITM's clinic in a safe and efficient way.
Last week ITM also supported the reference laboratory of the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in setting up an epidemiological database. Furthermore, ITM scientists are investigating the virus in the high security labs of the Institute where they are conducting research into new diagnostics and are also preparing to support if necessary African countries which have a weak public health system.
Meanwhile, the Institute’s travel clinic continues to answer questions from concerned travellers. ITM is monitoring the situation closely and informs Belgian travellers via the travel medicine website, Wanda.
