ITM vacancies

Postdoctoral fellow in spatial epidemiology
Department of Public Health
Emerging infectious diseases
  Apply before: 02 Jan.

More than 480 staff members at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) contribute every day to improving the health of millions of people worldwide. Our researchers conduct more than 200 scientific projects in the fields of tropical medicine and international health. Our teaching staff welcomes more than 500 professionals from around the world each academic year to attend our highly regarded medical courses. Tens of thousands of travel and STI consultations take place in our clinic each year, and our internationally recognized reference laboratories examine many hundreds of thousands of samples.

There is only one way we can accomplish these very diverse tasks: thanks to a great pass-sion for our mission. Does ITM appeal to you as a workplace? If so, we would be delighted to welcome you as a postdoctoral fellow at the Unit of Emerging Infectious Diseases of the Department of Public Health.

The department of public health (DPH) is an integral part of ITM and supports health of vulnerable populations. The DPH offers a multidisciplinary and diverse working environment focusing on four areas: Tropical Infectious Diseases (TID), Health Systems and Health Policy, Non-Communicable Diseases and Sexual and Reproductive Health. Most of our research involves extensive collaborations both across the departments at ITM and with colleagues from low-, middle- and high-income countries.

Within the TID the Emerging infectious Diseases unit works on the epidemiology and control of infectious diseases of public health importance, particularly vector-borne and rodent-borne dis-eases. We have strong scientific links with partners in Africa and South America and work is carried out in close collaboration with partners in each country. In the context of climate-change-driven emergence and spread of infectious diseases, understanding disease dynamics to inform and optimize control efforts is at the heart of our research.

To complement our team of experts, we are looking for a postdoctoral fellow in spatial epidemiology.

  • You will support our research with your expertise in spatial epidemiology and statistics, while also developing your own research projects with your partners or our longstanding collaborators.
  • You will play an active role in the development of the research portfolio of the emerging infectious diseases unit.
  • You will be involved in conducting research on arboviroses and rodent borne diseases and are expected to design your own studies, while receiving training to enhance professional skills and research independence.
  • You will design innovative research proposals for submission to competitive external funding sources.
  • You will prepare and publish scientific manuscripts, independently or/and in support of the Principal Investigator of existing studies.
  • You will also be expected to teach techniques within your field of expertise to colleagues within the research network of the unit.

You are expected to have experience with large datasets and conduct spatial epidemiological analysis. We will ask you to actively seek grant opportunities in epidemiology and to pursue independent research. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary discussions about the significance of the results with colleagues both within and outside the research unit, as well as with collaborators and stakeholders. You will also get the opportunity to present your scientific results at seminars and conferences, both nationally and internationally. As we work in LMICs, you are expected to travel  for a short duration to our partner countries when needed.

Applicants should have a PhD in epidemiology, public health or a related field.

Competencies and skills :

  • Autonomy in data analysis (preferably in R), using spatial epidemiological and biostatistical methods.
  • Some experience in international field activities (data collection, study coordination), preferentially in or in collaboration with LMICs.
  • You hold a scientific track record, supported by peer-reviewed publications
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (minimum level B2).
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining trustful working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and communities in various international contexts and settings.
  • High motivation for scientific excellence, quality driven, service minded and result oriented

Additional assets

  • Knowledge of other languages such as Dutch, Spanish, Swahili and French is an asset.
  • Experience in project management is an asset.

ITM is committed to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive institute. We strive for excellence and relevance, integrity, sustainability and persistence and fairness. Your assignment contributes to the socially relevant mission of ITM. We value human dignity and diversity, academic creativity and a critical spirit, solidarity and cooperation, and the well-being of employees, students, patients and clients. We offer you:

  • A full-time appointment for 1 year, extendable upon funding and positive evaluation.
  • A collegial working environment with attention to work-life balance and individual growth and development.
  • A workplace in the middle of the vibrant city of Antwerp, easily accessible by public transport.
  • A salary set according to the pay scales of ITM and the Flemish universities and to your work experience with some supplementary benefits, such as private pension scheme and meal voucher subscription.
  • An immigration and relocation assistance package if applicable.
