I still hold to my belief, perhaps somewhat naïve, that I can make a significant impact in alleviating suffering in Benin and across Africa on a larger scale – the classic dream of a public health practitioner. This belief was deeply nurtured during the Global Health in Times of Crises short course, which I took as an elective for my MPH programme.
Firstly, the course content allowed us to delve beneath the surface and explore the multiple crises humanity faces. Secondly, the diversity of participants and their different perspectives provided a rich source of knowledge and insights. Thirdly, the expertise of the course leaders and their facilitation techniques played a crucial role in creating a supportive learning environment. Lastly, the involvement of diverse lecturers in the course further enriched the experience. Together, these elements have reinforced my determination to pursue my goal and have instilled confidence that I can contribute meaningfully to address the challenges faced in global health crises.
With this course, I gained valuable tools to critically analyse global health crises and develop actions to safeguard the health and well-being of humans, considering factors that may originate from distant determinant perspectives. As a result, I have gained increased confidence in my choice to pursue a career focused on the intricate intersection of climate change and health. This field demands a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics at play, and I now feel equipped to navigate and contribute to this important area of work.
