Parasitic infections

As the name implies, parasitic infections are caused by parasites. A parasite is an organism that uses another living organism (called the "host") to complete its natural development cycle. A parasite lives temporarily or permanently in or on its host and extracts its food from it. Even though all pathogens (viruses, bacteria, worms, protozoa, mycoses…) are parasites, often worms and protozoal infections are referred to when speaking of 'parasites'. Parasites can live in humans (e.g., malaria, intestinal ameba, worms…) or can live on humans (e.g., ticks, lice, fleas, mites…). Specialised diagnostic tools are often needed to detect parasites, and for some, treatment is difficult to obtain in Belgium. ITM has internationally imported treatment for rare parasites available.
