Rabies

ITM offers pre- and post-exposure treatment for rabies.

Rabies is a fatal infection caused by a virus

Infection occurs through the saliva of an infected mammal or bat. The virus can enter the body through a bite, a scratch or by licking mucous membranes.

ITM is the national reference centre for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, and immunoglobulins are only available at ITM and the Antwerp University Hospital. It is important to administer the vaccine and immunoglobulins as quickly as possible after exposure. Given the high mortality rate associated with rabies, it is advisable to seek the advice of ITM experts if you suspect infection.

In case of emergency

If you were bitten by a dog, monkey, cat or bat during your travels, treatment with PEP should be started as soon as possible. You will receive a series of injections of the rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin.
