Background

Dr Christelle Boyi Hounsou is a researcher at the Centre de recherche en reproduction humaine et en démographie (CERRHUD), one of ITM's partner institutions in Benin. She coordinates CERRHUD's support for national maternal and child health programmes. She recently defended her PhD, 'Advancing the Implementation of Facility-based Maternal Death Reviews in Benin using realist evaluation’.

In this webinar, Christelle will reflect on her academic journey, studies, and career trajectory in research, science, and academia. She will also explore the 2026 theme of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science: 'Turning vision into impact through good practices that advance inclusion in STEM for women and girls'.

Her experiences and reflections will serve as the starting point for a facilitated discussion on the opportunities and challenges that women and girls in science may encounter throughout their scholarly careers.

The Q&A session will be moderated by her PhD supervisor, Bruno Marchal, Professor and Head of the Complexity and Health Unit at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp.

Christelle Boyi Hounsou is passionate about tackling the complexities of health systems. She is committed to developing sustainable, innovative, and context-sensitive strategies to strengthen health services in low-resource settings. She coordinates CERRHUD’s support for national maternal and child health programmes and fosters South–South and South–North networks to build local capacity. Through her work, she aims to support meaningful and lasting improvements in health systems.
