Informations générales
The Short course on Clinical Research and Evidence-based Medicine (SCREM) aims to empower healthcare professionals and clinical researchers to design, conduct, and communicate high-quality research. It addresses the need for evidence-based solutions to health challenges, improving patient care and research outcomes both in low-resource settings and the Global North.
Using a Socratic approach, the course provides a comprehensive curriculum on research design, Evidence-based medicine (EBM), literature appraisal, research communication, ethical standards, and grant writing. Students will gain practical skills in formulating research projects and applying EBM, in a wide range of settings.
This course is designed for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students in global health or clinical research, particularly those working in healthcare settings, including both low-resource environments and more developed regions.
Students will engage in a mix of lectures, case studies, and hands-on activities. Assessment is based on a portfolio that includes a written essay on EBM, an executive summary of their personal research project, and an oral presentation.
Objectifs d'apprentissage
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Design a research project that investigates the etiology, diagnostics, clinical management, or disease prevention of health problems, specifically in low-resource settings.
- Apply principles of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) to real-world clinical scenarios, using evidence to develop clinical guidelines and assess their relevance for low-resource settings.
- Retrieve and critically analyze relevant research articles to evaluate their applicability and relevance to healthcare practice and research. This includes the ability to use gathered evidence in guideline and algorithm development.
- Construct clear and effective oral and written presentations to communicate research findings to diverse audiences, adapting the message to the needs of both professional and scientific communities.
- Analyze common challenges in the implementation of research projects and propose strategies to overcome these challenges.
- Apply ethical principles and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards in the planning and execution of clinical research, ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical guidelines.
- Know how to develop a grant application, including a detailed budget, and identify suitable funding sources for small-scale research projects in low-resource settings.
