General information

This module will introduce you to the classification, transmission and drivers of zoonoses as well as basic approaches to control these diseases.

Learning objectives

  • Be familiar with and distinguish between the terms and definitions used in the context zoonoses.
  • Correctly classify zoonoses using different classification systems.
  • Describe the aetiology and source(s) of infection for humans
  • Know the impact of selected zoonoses on human and animal health
  • Understand the importance of different approaches to the diagnosis and control of selected zoonoses 
  • Distinguish between the different risk factors and the epidemiological settings they are applicable to.
  • Identify risk groups and populations for the transmission as well as the emergence of zoonotic pathogens.
  • Explain and rank the risks of zoonotic diseases in different settings and populations.
  • Differentiate between the main principles of disease control in animal and humans.
  • Evaluate the suitability of certain control measures to specific types of zoonoses.
  • Explain the role of veterinary health and human health professionals in the control of zoonoses.
