About the course

General information

This module will introduce you to general concepts of epidemiology, including the quantification of disease incidence and prevalence, measures of association and their interpretation, basic sampling designs and statistical testing.

Learning objectives

  • Understand basic concepts of veterinary epidemiology in a One Health environment
  • Perform basic statistical calculations using R Studio
  • Calculate measures of location and dispersal, prevalence and incidence from field survey data
  • Understand and interpret the following measures: precision, accuracy, random and systematic errors, interaction and causality.
  • Understand the difference between experimental and observational studies, prospective and retrospective studies in veterinary epidemiology in order to analyse and interpret experimental and observational data.
  • Understand basic statistical concepts such as: Type I and II errors, power, confidence interval, probability theory and distributions, linear regression, validity, binary and count data and generalized linear models
  • Perform a standard statistical analysis using the generalized linear model
