Veronique Dermauw is leading the Unit of Zoonoses at the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Institute of Tropical Medicine. Her work focusses on zoonotic helminth and foodborne infections of veterinary and public health importance (e.g., taeniasis/cysticercosis, echinococcosis).
She completed her doctoral (2013) and Master (2009) in Veterinary Sciences, as well as a the postgraduate programme in Statistical Data Analysis (2021) at Ghent University. In 2015, she joined ITM as a postdoctoral researcher in the team of professor Dorny in the Unit of Helminthology, and since April 2023, she has been appointed as acting head for the Unit of Zoonoses.
She has been involved in several research and capacity strengthening consortia (NIH ‘EFECAB’, Bill & Melinda Gates ‘CYSTICO’, DGD-ITM Framework Agreements 3, 4 & 5) in the South (e.g. DR Congo, South Africa, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso).
She's ITM coordinator for the capacity strengthening DGD-ITM 2022-2026 South Africa programme (DVTD component), as well as topic coordinator in the Vietnam, Ethiopia, and DR Congo programmes. She is lead project writer, and copromotor of the VLIR-UOS 'EmFaVie' and FWO-NAFOSTED 'FasciCoM' projects.
She is the ITM director of the MSc Global One Health (former MSc Tropical Animal Health), that focusses on the interactions between human, animal and environmental health, following the One Health approach and is organized collaboratively between ITM and the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She is also module coordinator and facilitator in the MSc Global One Health, for which she is teaching in epidemiology and helminthology.
