Alumni webinar - Visceral leishmaniasis elimination in East Africa (Ermias Diro)
Online

Visceral leishmaniasis, also known as kala-azar, is one of the deadliest vector-borne neglected tropical diseases. Currently, East Africa bears the highest burden of the disease, following the success of elimination programmes in the Indian subcontinent, which historically had the highest burden.
In June 2023, East African countries reaffirmed their commitment to eliminating visceral leishmaniasis from the region by 2030. While this commitment is commendable, several accelerated measures are needed to achieve this goal.
In light of World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day, ITM alumnus Ermias Diro will share his insights on the challenges of eliminating visceral leishmaniasis in East Africa.
The Q&A session will be moderated by Carl Boodman, an Infectious Diseases doctor, Medical Microbiologist, and current PhD candidate at ITM and UAntwerp.
