About the course

The course offers room for updating and discussing the epidemiological situation and advances in the knowledge, prevention and control of Dengue and other arboviral diseases with special reference to Chikungunya, Zika, Yellow Fever, Mayaro and Oropouche. Topics of interest are the patient clinical management, vector control, integrated surveillance, advances in pathogenesis research, vaccines, human, viruses and vector genetics, new control tools, the influence of climate change. New international initiatives and their impact on the arbovirus disease control will be shared.

Courses are facilitated by both national and international lecturers from countries such as El Salvador, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, USA, Germany and Belgium. ITM is represented by epidemiologist Veerle Vanlerberghe, virologist Kevin Ariën, and social scientist Koen Peeters.

Audience

Medical doctors, virologists, immunologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, entomologists, health administrators, among others interested in the subject.

The 18th edition of the International Course on Dengue and other emerging Arboviruses is organised in collaboration with ITM, the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for the Study of Dengue and its Control, the Cuban Society of Microbiology and Parasitology, the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Cuba, the Pan American Organization for Health/World Health, amongst others.

The mission of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Instituto de Medicina Tropical) ''Pedro Kouri'' (IPK) in Cuba is to promote and develop scientific research and innovation for the prevention, control and elimination of infectious diseases, the disposition of specialised and high-tech services for epidemiological surveillance, diagnosis and medical care, with the objective of improving the quality of life of the Cuban population and the rest of the international community. One of its laboratories is a WHO Collaborating Centre and, on the national level, the leading authority in microbiology, parasitology, tropical and clinical medicine, and the epidemiology of communicable diseases.
