Open Monuments Day 2025

A monument in motion: ITM as a silent witness of its time
At the corner of Nationalestraat and Kronenburgstraat in Antwerp stands the Institute of Tropical Medicine, housed since 1933 in a striking Art Deco building. This protected heritage site is not only a scientific research institute but also a monument reflecting the spirit of its time.
The main building was designed by architects Marcel Spittael and Paul Lebon as part of a provincial health project. In 1924, their design was awarded by a jury that included none other than Victor Horta. Visitors are invited to explore a place where architecture and science converge. Geometric lines and materials such as marble, white copper, and tropical wood give the building a quiet elegance. Its clear structure and thoughtful layout embody the idealism and forward-thinking spirit of the 1930s.
Through guided walks in the main building and the former cloister of Campus Rochus, you’ll discover ITM’s heritage in style.
The eye-catcher is the water basin at the Kronenburgstraat entrance. As part of the Stille Wateren heritage project, this jewel of the sunken Art Deco garden is being reinvigorated. A vintage photo booth, a quiet corner to listen to the Transmission podcast, and other activities offer an immersive experience on Open Monuments Day.
With this edition, ITM is already looking ahead to its 120th anniversary in 2026. Step inside and discover a unique place where history, science, and style intertwine to tell a compelling story.
