General information
The thesis writing process gives the students the opportunity to integrate knowledge, methods and skills acquired during the MPH programme. It allows them to collect, analyse and use primary and/or secondary, quantitative and/or qualitative data, as well as carry out reviews of literature. They will also gain the ability to critically appraise their personal experiences and contextual issues and use this in arriving at logical conclusions. The students will select thesis topics in line with the focus of the MPH on Health Systems and Disease Control (HSDC), their study plan, personal interests and experience.
The thesis document and oral defence will allow the examination board to assess the level of the student's attainment of the MPH learning objectives.
Learning objectives
After the thesis writing and defence the participants should be able to:
1- Analyse and frame a public health problem at global, national, regional or local level within the thematic and methodological scope of the MPH and the chosen study plan:
- Select and define a problem linked to their experience and relevant for their (potential) professional context and for ongoing scientific and policy debates
- Review the relevant literature and other sources of information to understand/analyse the problem
- Use appropriate concepts, theories and methods (including analysis of primary and/or secondary data) taught during the course
2-To propose sound and appropriate strategies in response to the given problem taking the health system’s perspective and the local, national and international context into account, and specifically:
- Review and summarize the relevant peer-reviewed literature and other sources on relevant strategies.
- Propose strategies and/or a research agenda leading to concrete solutions
- Argue why the proposed strategies are relevant and feasible in the local/national/international context
3-To effectively share their work in a professional manner; and specifically:
- Write a clear text, showing proficiency in the use of public health vocabulary and technical terms, and in scientific formatting of a text (logical structure, adequate format of tables & figures)
- Formulate arguments in a coherent way
- Cite bibliographic references appropriately and correctly
- Convincingly present a summary of their thesis work, using relevant computer skills and within a limited period of time
- Demonstrate insight in methodological, domain-specific (related to the thesis topic) and broader issues (such as health system dimensions, policy implications, international/global dimensions)
