Collaboration

ITM invests in the development of international educational cooperation projects based on common scientific interests, values, scientific excellence and relevance for students, society and development.

Students and staff can benefit from ITM’s strong international ties and membership in many EU and international/global partnerships and networks. European and international cooperation projects in education include strategic partnerships, knowledge alliances as well as capacity building projects. These are coordinated by ITM’s Education Office and the education units in the three scientific departments. Significant examples are tropEd and the ‘Alliance for Education in Tropical Medicine and International Public Health'.

tropED

tropEd is an international network of member institutions for higher education in international/global health from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Latin America. tropEd provides postgraduate opportunities for education and training contributing to sustainable development. It focuses on improving the management of health services for disadvantaged populations. The innovative approach is based on mobility of people, the exchange of experiences in different disciplines and the establishment of a common standard in education and training. Several of ITM’s courses are accredited by tropEd.

Alliance for Education in Tropical Medicine and International Public Health

As a component of the institutional agreement (“fifth framework agreement or FA5”) between ITM and the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD), the Alliance serves as a framework to develop educational partnerships, collaboration and exchange with international partner institutions in higher education in the agreement’s partner countries (“FA5 countries”) and beyond. The main aim is to foster quality, innovation, internationalisation and peer learning in the field of postgraduate education. Mutual learning is at the heart of the Alliance. 

In and across FA5 country programmes, the Alliance strengthens the internationalisation of educational and training initiatives in the partner institutions by supporting staff mobility (partners, ITM alumni and ITM) for North-South-South exchange.

Beyond the FA5 country programmes, educational initiatives are developed in collaboration with non-FA5 country programme partners. These include collaborative new e-learning or blended courses or joint initiatives strengthening teaching and learning support, including professional educational development. 

These Alliance partners mainly represent:

  • former country programme partners under previous ITM-DGD framework agreements (FA4 and FA3);

  • partners in FA5 thematic networks;

  • country programme partners funded by VAIS (the Flemish Agency for International Cooperation);  

  • partners in Erasmus+ Capacity Strengthening project.

Even though priority goes to initiatives in collaboration with the aforementioned partners, the Alliance is open to new collaborations as well. However, new partnerships should be clearly based on a strategic interest of ITM’s scientific and educational staff to explore longer term academic collaborations. 

In today’s age of global knowledge and technology, the international interconnectedness of persons and institutions and opportunities for staff mobility (physical and virtual), are considered paramount to work effectively as health experts in a global scene.
