Wetenschap Centraal: Antibiotics under pressure (Brecht Ingelbeen)
About this event
Antibiotics have been saving many lives for decades, but in recent years they have been losing their power due to increasing bacterial resistance. Common infections are increasingly becoming difficult or even untreatable. The impact is particularly great in low- and middle-income countries, but the problem is also growing rapidly in our own country.
In this science café, you will discover how antibiotic use and our environment contribute to the spread of resistant bacteria. What can we do to turn the tide and avoid a future without effective antibiotics? Come and listen, and join the conversation about one of the biggest health challenges of our time.
'Wetenschap Centraal' is the science café of the University of Antwerp for everyone with a healthy thirst for knowledge. Complex issues explained through clear science.

Speaker
Brecht Ingelbeen
Dr Brecht Ingelbeen is a pharmacist and infectious disease epidemiologist. He researches how resistant bacteria spread within communities: what role do our behaviour and living environment play in this, and how can we detect and counter this spread? Through his research on antibiotic resistance, he contributes to concrete solutions, from early detection to primary care measures. During Science Central, he takes you into the world of antibiotic resistance and explains what is needed to tackle this growing health threat.
