The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) has selected five renowned design teams to develop a vision for the renewal and expansion of its city-centre campus in Antwerp. This marks a milestone in ITM’s Masterplan, which will modernise the campus and prepare the institute to strengthen its role as an international hub for research, innovation, education and medical care.

For more than a century, ITM has been among the world’s leading institutes in the fight against infectious diseases and other global health challenges. With the Masterplan, the institute reaffirms its ambition to further consolidate that position. A stronger ITM ensures that Belgium is better prepared for the health challenges of tomorrow.

“With the selection of these five teams, we are taking a decisive step,” says Ann Peters, General Manager of ITM. “Their vision will help us future-proof our campus and anchor our research, education and medical services for the long term. We are investing today in the health of tomorrow – in Antwerp and across the globe.”

One campus, one vision

The Masterplan combines the modernisation of existing buildings with the construction of new state-of-the-art laboratories and the replacement of outdated infrastructure. The guiding principle is one health, one global campus: a place where science, innovation and care come together to deliver solutions to global health issues.

The selected teams

In collaboration with the Team Vlaams Bouwmeester and Agentschap Facilitair Bedrijf (Flemish Government), ITM launched an Open Call. From 54 leading European teams that submitted a proposal, five have now been invited to submit a tender:

  • Caruso St John en De Smet Vermeulen architecten

  • DIERENDONCKBLANCKE ARCHITECTEN, Havana architectuur en Karuur architecten

  • Hub en Witherford Watson Mann Architects

  • noArchitecten

  • Origin Architecture & Engineering en Robbrecht en Daem architecten

By mid-2026, ITM will select the team that will develop the final design.
