Mobile phones
You can save money on mobile phone costs by buying a prepaid card instead of taking out a subscription. Prepaid cards are available in newspaper shops and supermarkets.
The three largest providers in Belgium are Base, Orange, and Proximus. Lycamobile offers inexpensive international calling options, but its reliability can vary.
By law, all prepaid customers must register their SIM card before using it. Registration can be done online or in a Base, Orange, or Proximus shop. For Lycamobile SIM cards, check in advance whether registration is possible at the shop where you purchase the card. If not, ask the shop owner where to register it. Without registration, the card cannot be used.
Mobile Vikings is another popular option, offering many free text messages, mobile data, and flexible calling rates with each top-up. If you only need internet access, you can order a data-only SIM card, which is commonly used in laptops, iPads, or tablets.
Currency
The euro (€) is the official currency of Belgium and most other countries in the European Union. The euro is available in the following denominations:
Banknotes: 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 euro
Coins: 2 and 1 euro; 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents
Since 2019, all cash payments in Belgium are rounded to the nearest 5 cents. However, the €0.01 and €0.02 coins remain legal tender and can still be used for payments.

You can use your bank card at any ATM. Withdrawals in euro are free of charge, except with the Easycard, where a fee of €0.50 applies.
If you need cash while shopping, you can also ask to withdraw an additional amount at the supermarket checkout. For example, if your groceries cost €16, you may request an extra €10, €20, or €50. The cashier will give you this in cash, at no extra cost.
