Neglected diseases, such as sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis and buruli ulcer, are a group of 17 infectious diseases which occur mainly in developing countries. The diseases are overshadowed by the big three: HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. However, a billion people are at risk for neglected diseases, especially those living in poverty and poor hygienic conditions.
At ITM, neglected diseases are high on the agenda. We conduct clinical, epidemiological and biomedical research activities to fight these diseases. For decades, ITM has been developing and manufacturing a sleeping sickness test which has been used in all endemic areas. A group of international researchers led by ITM, has recently published a guide for clinical studies on neglected diseases in difficult field conditions.
