Exotic Mosquitoes in Belgium
Exotic mosquitoes are not new in Belgium
In recent years, researchers of ITM have spotted several exotic mosquito species (among which the Asian tiger mosquito) in motorway car parks, companies that trade in second-hand tyres and lucky bamboo, and in an industrial zone. The tiger mosquito originates from Southeast Asia, but in recent years, it has settled in parts of Europe, America and Africa as well. This is mainly due to global transportation of goods, climate change, and its good adaptability.
Exotic mosquitoes can be vectors of arboviruses like chikungunya, dengue or Zika. By identifying import locations of exotic mosquitoes in Belgium, the government can better control and delay their establishment in our regions. The tiger mosquito is spotted almost annually, but has not yet established itself for the time being. It is important to monitor their populations closely to assess the risk of virus transmission.
