ITM has the pleasure of congratulating and introducing Dr Mamane Moussa Dan Baki (Niger), the newly elected alumni representative to ITM's General Council for the 2026–2030 term. Mamane will take over from Elizabeth Tabitha Abbew (Ghana), who was the second ITM alumna elected to this role since the establishment of the General Council on 31 January 2018.

Mamane Moussa Dan Baki is a medical doctor with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), where he has progressed from emergency physician to Project Medical Referent across five countries where MSF intervenes (Niger, Nigeria, Chad, South Sudan and DRC). His work spans hospital co-management, epidemic and outbreak response and governance in complex humanitarian settings, from leading an Ebola treatment centre in DRC to coordinating a diphtheria outbreak response in Niger. Already in leadership roles before starting his Master's in Public Health (MPH), Mamane credits the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp with reshaping how he sees health systems, broadening his lens beyond the humanitarian field to grasp its full complexity. In July 2026, he graduated from our Master in Public Health. He is now working toward Medical Coordinator responsibilities, bringing that broader perspective to mission-level humanitarian health programming.

During his MPH studies, Mamane acted as student representative for the MPH programme, a role he says he did not take lightly. Fluent in English and French, he has seen how ITM’s approach translates across diverse health systems. As alumni representative, his goal is to strengthen connections between alumni, students and ITM, ensuring alumni experiences and feedback help shape the Institute’s future.

"I am honoured and very grateful to my fellow alumni for their trust. Many of us work in settings that look very different from one another, and I want those experiences to reach the General Council and help ITM keep learning from its own graduates. I look forward to serving the alumni community," says Mamane.

As alumni representative, Mamane will contribute to ITM's journey and its ambition to be a leading open and global campus in tropical medicine and international health. We wish him an enriching and constructive experience in our General Council with many exciting and fruitful exchanges and collaborations.

About ITM's General Council

The General Council is a statutory council that ensures that the policy, administration and management of the Institute are in accordance with its purpose, identity and integrity. It has the statutory power to monitor the mission, vision, values and core tasks of ITM, and to appoint, evaluate and dismiss the members of ITM's Board of Governors.

The General Council includes both voting and non-voting members. The voting members are designated by a number of government agencies and Flemish universities, together with representatives of other stakeholders including staff, students, alumni as well as institutional partners in the Global South and North. The members of the Board of Governors and the Government Commissioner are the non-voting members of the General Council. The General Council meets at least twice a year.
