ITM Heritage Fund

By donating to our heritage, we are able to restore, conserve and digitise the historical collection of movable and immovable heritage of ITM.

Since 1933, ITM has been based at its current location in Antwerp. ITM continued to exist throughout the colonial period and also assumed the role of academic institution after Congo's independence, focusing on education, scientific research, medical services and international cooperation.

The institute possesses a substantial historical collection, consisting of movable and immovable heritage. It is in urgent need of inventory and conservation.

ITM's collection is invaluable for historical, historical-scientific, anthropological and social research. Moreover, the collection is very relevant in the current social debate, where we look critically at our past. By restoring, conserving and digitising ITM's collection, we aim not only to preserve knowledge, but also to make it accessible to the general public.

And you can play an important role in this!

ITM's collections

ITM's heritage collection consists of five different parts:

  • Immovable heritage

  • Academic heritage

  • Heritage library

  • Archive

  • Image Archive

Real estate heritage

In 1993, the ITM buildings and paintings were listed as protected monuments by ministerial decree. The monumental ITM main building dates from 1933 and is an excellently preserved example of Art Deco architecture. ITM established a Heritage Management Plan for the building, approved by the Flemish Ministry.

The campus for students and scholars is housed in a 17th-century monastery, which was restored in the 1990s in consultation with monument conservation.

Sustainable renovation

When ITM's main building was built, energy standards were non-existent. Many authentic elements, such as the stained-glass windows, have high heritage value but little durability. Moreover, after almost 100 years, many original elements of the building envelope are in need of renovation, such as facades, windows and roofs. Our Safety Health & Environment and Facility Management Units launched a project to improve the building's energy value while respecting its heritage. In doing so, they aim to respect the original appearance of faƧades and internal spaces as much as possible.

Restoration of the main corridor

As late as the early 1990s, the original black and white patterned floor tiles and green wall tiles in the ITM building were systematically replaced by more modern ones. We want to reverse that evolution. In fact, while drawing up the heritage management plan, we discovered that the architects wanted to use the formal language of the interior to make it clear to the visitor what kind of space they were in, namely a primary (ceremonial), secondary (practical) or tertiary (technical) space. By bringing back the architects' original vision as much as possible, we want to restore harmony to the building.

broden

Renovation of Room Broden

Room Broden functioned as ITM's library from 1933 to 1985. In 1985, the library moved to two new floors built on top of ITM. However, Room Broden had not emerged unscathed from the mid-20th century. Under general manager Marc Van Boven, Room Broden was restored as much as possible in the 1990s, but the original bookcases in the south wall were closed for acoustic reasons. We now want to restore those bookcases to match the original interior as closely as possible.

Academic heritage

Our academic heritage consists of historical material used in research and teaching, such as microscope slides, wet specimens, insect cabinets, wall charts and maps but also donated works of art, such as the paintings by Allard L'Olivier and the statue 'Porteur FatiguƩ'. We are currently putting a lot of effort into registration so that we know what we have, followed by restoration. During the next phase, we will valorise the heritage. That means we will place a value on the various objects. For this, we are working together with students, volunteers and external experts.

boeken erfgoedbibliotheek

Heritage Library

Medical, scientific and colonial-administrative publications that acquired historical value over the years are currently scattered around our buildings. We will give these a permanent place in the heritage library of Room Broden.

archief

Archive

ITM's static archive contains official documents, administrative records, letters, personnel files, financial documents, architectural plans, diplomas, study programmes, research files and medical records. The current archive is scattered across ITM's various buildings. The documents need to be brought together and further inventoried.

Image Archive

The unique ITM image archive contains magic lantern slides, slides, photographs, negatives and digital photographs used during lectures, teaching and research. Many images have already been digitised, but standardised inventory is needed.
