Today sees the start of the 61st edition of the annual Colloquium of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp. For 3 days experts from around the world will share their views and experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. They will reflect on the direct and indirect impact of the virus on global and local health. Because of the pandemic, the conference will be held online for the first time.

New epidemics create new problems and questions. How does the COVID-19 pandemic affect global and local healthcare? What can we learn from the past few months and from previous disease outbreaks? During this 3-day event scientists and decision makers will examine these issues and analyse the impact of COVID-19 on global and local health.

"This edition of our Colloquium brings together international experts from different scientific fields and offers a variety of perspectives from all over the world. It allows us to share experiences of and insights into the COVID-19 pandemic. After all, the challenges that lie ahead require a global approach, that’s also multidisciplinary – we can all learn from each other", says Dr Marc Alain Widdowson, Director of ITM.

The Colloquium is the annual scientific conference of ITM, funded by the Belgian Development Cooperation. Since 1959, this event has brought together thousands of experts from North and South to discuss the most pressing scientific issues on tropical medicine and international health. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, this year’s event will be held entirely online for the first time since its inception.
