ITM celebrates 120 years of science, care and global engagement

In 2026, ITM marks a significant milestone: 120 years of advancing health worldwide. What began in 1906 has grown into an internationally recognised institute for research, education and service in global health. Throughout 2026, we will reflect on our history, on today's challenges, and look ahead to the future through a diverse anniversary programme.

A year of reflection, dialogue and connection

The 120-year celebrations are not a single event, but a year-long programme bringing together staff, students, partners, policymakers and the wider public. Across conferences, exhibitions, open days and storytelling initiatives, ITM will highlight the many dimensions of its work, from laboratory science and clinical care to education, innovation, policy and community engagement.

Highlights from the anniversary programme

Throughout 2026, the anniversary programme will unfold in thematic moments:

Open doors and public engagement moments, offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look at ITM’s work and heritage
Exhibitions, including a major exhibition marking 50 years of Ebola research
Storytelling initiatives, such as “day in the life” portraits of staff, students and partners, and a focus on ITM’s heritage collections
Public lectures and debates, including events that address decolonisation, ethics and the future of global health
Scientific conferences and forums bringing together international experts, practitioners and communities
Community and partner events, strengthening dialogue with local neighbourhoods, alumni and international collaborators

These activities will be spread across the year, allowing different audiences to engage with ITM in ways that resonate with them.

Looking forward

While the anniversary offers an opportunity to look back, its primary aim is to look ahead. The challenges ITM addresses, infectious diseases, health inequities, access to care, remain deeply relevant today. We underscore our ongoing commitment to scientific excellence, partnership and impact, while continuing to evolve in response to a changing world.
