Marleen Boelaert scholarship
Marleen Boelaert, respected epidemiologist and one of the driving forces behind ITM, was committed to social justice and equity. She built an extensive international network, was a mentor for countless students and staff members, raised awareness on neglected tropical diseases such as sleeping sickness, and aimed for access to quality health care for all. When she passed away, the Marleen Boelaert Study Fund was established in her honour.
What is included?
This scholarship can cover tuition and registration fees, accommodation, and a living allowance for the stay in Antwerp.
How is this scholarship awarded? What are the selection criteria?
The scholarship is awarded yearly to a student from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC). The student needs to be citizen of an LMIC and actually live there, as defined in the OECD-DAC* list of LMICs.
Please note that the academic selection process is separate from the scholarship selection. All applications will first be assessed by the academic selection committee, based on the applicant’s background, relevant experience and motivation.
As a student, you cannot directly apply for this scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a student applying for a regular study or research programme at ITM, with a specific interest in the themes that Marleen Boelaert was addressing: neglected tropical diseases, disease control or elimination, conflict settings or populations in danger. The selection committee decides who to award this scholarship, based on the applicant’s background, relevant experience and motivation.
