Sleeping sickness (humane African trypanosomiasis)
ITM has been contributing to the fight against sleeping sickness for over a century. The disease mostly remains active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Institute developed the most widely used detection test decennia ago and still produces it today. ITM researches new ways to combat the disease and is in charge of an international elimination initiative in DRC, financed by the Belgian Development Cooperation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
