Call for applications for the appointment of members of the Board of Governors

Due to the end of several mandates as members in July 2022, the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is calling for nominations for new members of its Board of Governors.

The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (ITM) is a world-renowned academic institution that focuses on conducting and promoting scientific research, professional and academic education, as well as scientific and social services in the field of tropical diseases and global health, with a special focus on low- and middle-income countries. ITM has a staff of over 400 people and a balance sheet total of approximately EUR 60 million. That income comes from Flemish and federal government grants, externally funded projects and ITM’s own activities.

The legal form is that of a Public Utility Foundation, in which the Board of Governors has full authority. The members are appointed by the General Council, which consists of members appointed by a number of government agencies and the Flemish universities and representatives of other interested parties, including staff, students and alumni and institutional partners in the South and North. This General Council has the statutory authority to ensure compliance with the mission, vision, values and core tasks of ITM, and to appoint, evaluate and dismiss the members of the Board of Governors.

Following the expiry of several mandates in July 2022, ITM is seeking candidates for the Board of Governors composed of up to 12 members with expertise in, amongst others, the following areas:

- Background & Experience

  • Clinical, biomedical and epidemiological research
  • Higher education and training 
  • Medical services and expertise 
  • Academic policy and management
  • International health care
  • Capacity building and development cooperation 

- Functional skills & expertise

  • Financial management & audit (*)
  • Information Technology
  • Human Resources
  • Communication
  • Legal
  • Real estate (*)

- Networking

  • Business world, in particular the biomedical sector
  • Administrative and political domain (*)

- Administrative experience

Applicants should also have strategic competencies, interpersonal skills, readiness for dialogue, broad vision and knowledge. Candidates with roots in low and middle income countries are particularly encouraged to apply. When assessing candidacies, special attention will be paid to the aspects marked with an asterisk in the list above.

As a rule, the Board will hold six meetings of approximately 3 hours each year at ITM’s headquarters in Antwerp, including one strategic meeting. The working language is Dutch.

The applications are treated with strict confidentiality. The General Council will finalise the appointments on 30 May 2022 on the advice of a selection committee.
