On 7 October, Antwerp Diner handed over a cheque to ITM of 32,000 euros. Thanks to this support, ITM researchers will map PrEP starters and the care they receive. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis is a highly effective medicine taken to prevent getting HIV. Researcher Thijs Reyniers and his colleagues at ITM’s Unit of Sexual Health including HIV want to know how many people who started PrEP still end up infected with HIV, and what profile these people have.

Antwerp Diner is a non-profit organisation that collects funds for research and prevention of AIDS and HIV, at their annual gala dinner, which took place on 24 April this year. Thanks to the successful event, Antwerp Diner raised a significant amount of money, which goes entirely to three good causes fighting against HIV/AIDS: ITM, Sensoa and Tomorrow4Isibani.

Thanks to their donation, after this study we will have a better picture of PrEP use in Belgium, PrEP-related care and the number of preventable HIV infections among PrEP starters. In time, these insights may also contribute to improving PrEP implementation in Belgium.

We would like to thank all those who attended the event and all donors. We can use all the help we can get in our quest for scientific excellence and societal relevance. Would you like to support ITM? Visit our support us page.
