Pieter Monsieurs is a senior scientist in Computational Biology at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), where he has been active since October 2019. His current research focuses on the analysis and integration of high-throughput sequencing data to address biological questions in protozoan pathogens, with a particular emphasis on population genomics, single-cell genomics and transcriptomics. His recent work contributes to a growing body of publications in these areas, supporting research across multiple ITM units, including the Trypanosoma unit (Prof. J. Van Den Abbeele), the Unit of Malariology (Prof. Anna Rosanas-Urgell), and the Unit of Molecular Parasitology (Prof. J.C. Dujardin).

In his recent publications, he applies advanced computational and statistical approaches to genomic, transcriptomic and single-cell data to study parasite diversity, adaptation and host–pathogen interactions. His work is closely aligned with collaborative, data-driven research and the development of reproducible bioinformatics workflows that support both fundamental and translational research.

Pieter Monsieurs obtained a Master’s degree in Bioscience Engineering (Cellular and Genetic Engineering) from KU Leuven in 2002 and a PhD in Bioinformatics in 2006. Prior to joining ITM, he held research positions at SCK-CEN and VITO, where he built broad expertise in computational biology and omics data analysis.
