During this course component students will be introduced the needs and knowledge to set up and run a district laboratory in resource-limited settings, according to Quality Management System principles.

Using lectures, exercises, self-study and discussions students will be introduced to the organization of a laboratory, the basics about staff management, equipment, logistics, and important aspects of the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phase of laboratory analyses. The course will conclude with an integrated exercise where students will use the knowledge acquired to (i) perform a root cause analysis of a laboratory occurrence and propose interventions, and (ii) to discuss the setting up of a diagnostic evaluation study. This course will be based on the ISO 15189, Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) as well as Strengthening Laboratory Management Toward Accreditation (SLMTA) principles to assure the reliability, quality, consistency and integrity of data generated by laboratories.


Overal goal

Critically assess the set-up of a laboratory and propose interventions to improve its organization, identify priority actions to assure the quality of a laboratory in terms of accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of the results, explore research opportunities within a diagnostic laboratory.

General objective

After having successfully completed the course component, participants should be able to think critically, to assess and propose interventions to set up or improve the quality of a laboratory in the field.
