Algemene informatie

This module deals with taxonomy, biology, ecology, life cycles, sampling and identification of ticks. It is offered in a blended format: web-based (distance learning) training and 1 week practical bench training at the University of Pretoria.

Leerdoelstellingen

  • Understand the biology, basic internal and external anatomy and survival mechanisms of ticks
  • Identify the important taxonomic characteristics of the various tick genera and their geographic distribution Select the equipment and procedures required for collecting: free-living immature and adult ticks from the environment, adult ticks from live hosts, immature and adult ticks from dead hosts
  • Initiate surveys to determine the distribution or seasonal occurrence of ticks
  • Understand methods by which acaricides are applied to the various domestic host species and to wildlife, and understanding of the concept of integrated control
  • Understand the host preferences of the important tick species and why certain host species, or hosts within a particular species are more heavily infested than others
  • Identify the different tick families, genera, species and stages
